Mafia blues

"I believe in politeness, I believe in school and in the development of young consciences. One day, someone told me that mafia would have been destroyed by an immense army made of primary school teachers. This is the right image to describe the importance of your teachers, researches and debates that happen at your school and after school, the importance of the essays you write at school. But, most of all, of what arises in your heart: love for justice and for our Country, that must be witnessed - in a small or in a big way - by any of us. And this is definitely Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino’s legacy, as well as the legacy of many people killed in the last decades by criminal organizations".

(Professor Maria Falcone, Giovanni Falcone’s sister, during a meeting at Sala della Cooperazione in Trento, Italy)

After Leonardo Sciascia’s Il Giorno della Civetta, Astragali Teatro carries on its cooperation with Libera, associazioni, numeri, nomi contro le mafie by proposing high school students this new production, aiming to support teachers and schools while they inform and make students aware of the mafia phenomenon.

Making students aware is the priority for those who, every day, are actively involved in fighting mafias. ‘Mafias kill less, recycle more. Due to their ability to anticipate and adapt, they have been able to get into the mechanisms of "immaterial" economy, boosting their profits and reducing social alarm. This happened without an adequate social and political consciousness (…) for these reasons we can affirm that mafia must be defeated at school’. (Don Luigi Ciotti)

Mafia Blues uses a multimedia language with an immediate impact on young people (readings, video, music), becoming an educational instrument useful for:

- starting a well-structured consideration about mafia, crime and corruption

- trace a historical path concerning the fight to the various forms of mafia

- spread texts and testimonies by authors that have dedicated their work to fighting mafia; many of them, unfortunately, have sacrificed their own life for this purpose, like Peppino Impastato.

- support teachers and School to make students aware that mafias condition in many ways everybody’s life.
